ONLINE EXHIBITION – WERNER BISCHOF
Take a journey with Werner Bischof’s fantastic photos: to other countries, to other times.
The Second World War is over. Werner Bischof leaves Switzerland on his bicycle for the first time in six years. On 3 September 1945 the Swiss photographer writes in his diary:
"Of course, the first thing you ask yourself is: what should I take along? What transportation is available? I read in the newspaper that a trip to Germany is like setting off from an island in the middle of the ocean. The best thing would be to equip oneself as if for an expedition."
In Friedrichshafen Bischof comes across two girls playing in the ruins of a church. For him, children symbolize innocence and yet they are also those who suffer most from the consequences of war. At the same time, they are a new generation; they are the future.
