Also available in 165 x 110 cm, Edition 3 & 2 AP | Through her project Plastic Ocean, Thirza Schaap explores our evolving relationship with plastic and its damaging impact on our planet. Inspired by classical still life paintings, she replaces traditional symbols of wealth and permanence – silverware, china, and glassware – with disposable cutlery, single-use plastic bottles and plastic bags, creating what looks like beautiful floral arrangements. Only at second glance does the viewer come to realise that what looks so aesthetically appealing is in fact made of plastic waste. Schaap lets beauty and repulsion clash, reflecting the uneasy realization of the tragedy that plastic waste causes.
