For the series Monuments, Douglas Mandry collected chunks of ice and pieces of geotextiles used to slow down the effects of glacier warming in the Swiss Alps.
For some of the images, the artist put pieces of ice in a homemade camera obscura to create photograms of the melting ice, thus achieving a visible representation of the vanishing process. For further works of the series, Mandry collected photographic archival material from expeditions dating back to the early 20th century and transferred those images onto the pieces of used geotextiles using lithography. The series Monuments is therefore a modern attempt of preserving the fading memories of the Swiss Alps and a past that no longer exists.
