Bildhalle honours the life and work of one of the most influential Swiss photographers of the 20th century. The exhibition brings together works from different periods of René Groebli's remarkable career, highlighting the extraordinary diversity of his artistic vision.
Born in Zurich in 1927, he developed an early fascination with photography and film, which shaped his experimental approach throughout his career.After completing his photographic training, Groebli quickly established himself as an innovative image-maker, exploring the relationship between photography, movement, and time. His groundbreaking series Rail Magic (1949) became internationally recognised for its dynamic, blurred images of a moving train, capturing the sensation of speed and atmosphere rather than a purely documentary reality.
In 1954, Groebli created The Eye of Love, an intimate and poetic series dedicated to his wife, Rita. The work remains one of his most celebrated photographic achievements and reflects his ability to transform personal experience into a universal visual language.
Throughout his long career, Groebli continuously experimented with new techniques and approaches, including pioneering work in colour photography. His oeuvre encompasses reportage, industrial photography, advertising, experimental imagery, and deeply personal artistic projects.
Driven by curiosity and a constant desire to explore the possibilities of the photographic medium, René Groebli created a body of work that bridges emotion, innovation, and visual poetry. His photographs continue to inspire new generations and remain an important contribution to the history of photography.
