Since 2017, Ingar Krauss has been portraying sugar beet in its individual forms. As in his 2016 still-life book '39 Bilder', he stages the sugar beet in natural light against a dark background, photographs them in analogue black and white, and reduces them to the essence of their appearance. Over the years, this has resulted in a typology of this ‘Beta vulgaris’.
His depictions of sugar beet present the crop with a sense of both simple dignity and melancholy, prompting reflection on how humans perceive and value nature and its produce.
To avoid superficial, hurried browsing, this publication was not conceived as a conventional book, but as an elaborately produced portfolio box, containing 36 individual picture cards printed in rich Tritone on card and a poster featuring the complete typology.
Ingar Krauss (*1965) works exclusively using analogue techniques, produces all his prints himself and regards photography as an ‘alchemical imaging process that is also related to the visual arts, painting and printmaking in terms of craftsmanship’.
