On the book New York 1978:

It is a gloomy and rather skeptical view of New York that Groebli portrays in New York 1978. The sensuousness and levity of his earlier (and later) works here give way to a melancholic-introverted view of a tough and extroverted metropolis. Here, loneliness looks through the camera’s viewfinder at an apparently impenetrable unknown. And almost threateningly it looks back at us. Keep Off!

And yet, it is autumn when in 1978 René Groebli comes to New York to explore the city just for himself, unencumbered by the usual tight schedules. It should have been a season when a summer-heated New York finally cools down, the city collectively breathes easier and the autumnal light makes the changing leaves glow.

On the book Nudes:

Sometimes Groebli's work seems more akin to painting or at least to a pictorial kind of photography. In place of blurring brush strokes or filters he uses the grain of the film itself for the visual distortion of his photographs.

With Nudes René Groebli gives us a work for sensuous pleasure that had grown over half a century. In the long history of sensual art photography one is hard pressed to find anyone comparable to the Swiss photo artist. His images appear timeless and still exhibit a technical perfection and expression of joy in experimentation that one usually ascribes to the avant-garde.

On the book Early Work 1945-1955:

René Groebli is the missing link in the Swiss photographic history of the second half of the 20th century. He merges the romanticism in photography with the visions of the technician, the modernist. Be prepared for surprises.

In 1943 René Groebli starts to take photographs with his father's new Rolleiflex camera. Discovering his passion for the medium, he decides to become a professional photographer. Up to 1955 he produces countless stories; from artistic projects to travels, reportages and portraits of people such as Le Corbusier, Charlie Chaplin or Robert Frank. During this decade he achieves international success with his two books Rail Magic and The Eye of Love.
