Werner Bischof's work is inspired by integrity and compassion. At the center is the human being, the human condition. It is eerie how little has changed, how up-to-date many of his photographs seem. Yet they are light years away from the self-righteous, often self-satisfied pathos of consternation that is epidemically rampant today.

In 2016, the famous Swiss photographer Werner Bischof (1916-1954) could celebrate his 100th birthday. To mark the occasion, this book recounts the life and work of this contemporary photographic witness from a new perspective: for the first time, unpublished photographs, drawings, letters and diary entries from his estate are presented alongside his world-famous photographs. Bishop's biography, photographic credo, and travel impressions come to life through his images and words.

Texts by Marco Bischof, Kristen Lubben and Fred Ritchin.
