While living in Ibiza, Spain, Louis Stettner, intrigued by the fishermen of the island and their age-old occupation, decided it would make an exciting and compelling series of photographs. He sought out a boat that would take him along, but after many refusals by the larger vessels, Pepe and Tony blithely invited him to accompany them on their small wooden boat, Antonio. As Louis recalled of the experience, “I went with them so often that I feel myself becoming a fisherman — a sign, perhaps, of a joyful fusion of photographer and subject.”
